Trump Cabinet
The Trump Administration
President Trump resoundingly won the Electoral College with 304 votes, and became the 45th President of the United States.
On January 6rd, the US Congress met in joint session and formally counted the Electoral College votes. Mr. Trump was confirmed as our next President with 304 electoral votes, well above the 270 needed to win. Ms. Clinton received 227 electoral votes. Mr. Pence was confirmed as our Vice President. Vice President Biden, President of the Joint Session, rejected a few objections to the vote by House Democrats and declared ‘It’s over’.
At noon on Inauguration Day, January 20, Donald Trump Jr. took the oath of office as the 45th President of the United States.
President Trump is filling out his cabinet and senior government positions. The US Senate must confirm most of the senior Federal government positions. On President Obama's first day in office, the Senate confirmed seven of his Cabinet nominees. By the end of Obama’s first week, more than a dozen senior-level positions were confirmed. We now have evidence that some in the Senate are trying to obstruct Trump’s cabinet and other choices.
One of President Trump’s most important decisions is selecting a Supreme Court nominee. He has named Neil M. Gorsuch to fill the vacant Associate Justice seat formerly held by Justice Antonin Scalia. Judge Gorsuch is currently a federal appeals court judge for the Tenth Circuit. We expect him to start confirmation hearings sometime in March.
Chatham Election Results
Chatham County remains a politically divided county. While the overall vote across the county went Democrat, there are distinct differences in voting patterns between the progressive northeast and the conservative remainder of the county. Eight county precincts voted solidly Republican; six voted solidly Democrat. At the precinct level, Trump, Burr, Walker, Stobbs, and Holland won their races, but could not overcome the large numbers of Democrat voters in the northeast and in Pittsboro.
